4/22/2022 (Permalink)

Give us a call anytime!

When summer comes around, most of us enjoy going somewhere else every now and then on an extended vacation. But even during a time of relaxation, it’s important to remember that even while you’re gone, things can still go wrong in your home. And the bills of damage left unattended can wreak havoc both during and after your vacation. But fortunately, the TODAY Show has a list of helpful tips to prevent the unexpected damages while you’re away;

  • If able, set your water heater on “vacation mode”
  • Make sure storm drains are clean to prevent backups
  • Turn down the house temperature
  • Leave some of the lights on to make it appear that someone is home
  • Consider turning off your water while you’re away to prevent water damage
  • Mow your lawn before leaving to allow the freshly cut grass to absorb more rainwater
  • Lock your doors and windows
  • Consider investing in a monitor or camera to be able to check on your home while away

By remembering to take some simple steps, you can help ensure that your home is protected from a variety of damage. We all want to enjoy our vacations without stress, and it’s a simple task with the right preparation. With a bit of planning, you can make sure you come back to your home in the same condition you left it.

Should I file an insurance claim?

4/22/2022 (Permalink)

Need advice on what to do? Give us a call 636-467-5444.

As a homeowner, renter, or business owner it is important to fully understand your insurance policy. Every policy is different, with exclusions and named perils. Being knowledgeable about your insurance as much as possible will help you in deciding if it is necessary for you to file a claim in the event your home or place of business suffers water damage. Here are some things to consider before filing an insurance claim:

If the total amount of repairs is less than your deductible, avoid filing, especially if other claims have been filled in the last ten years.

If it is an uncovered loss, you are responsible for the mitigation and repairs, be aware of what is covered under your insurance.

Claim frequency could affect you in the form of non-renewal for being a high-risk.

If damage occurs due to lack of maintenance that is your own responsibility, do not submit a claim. But remember, continuously maintaining your home or business can get you better premiums in the future.

Ultimately, being aware of all exclusions and coverage limits is important by knowing your options in which direction you need to go to mitigate and repair damage that occurs on your home or business.

When do you need a duct cleaning?

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

We are highly trained in duct cleaning. You can expect a 5 star experience.

Having periodical air duct cleaning service done is important. Read on to find out when you should engage professional air duct cleaning services!

When Do You Need Professional Air Duct Cleaning Services

Everybody wants a clean house. But what if your house is not as clean as you thought? Even though your floors and surfaces may be dust-free, it does not mean areas that you cannot see, and reach are clean. Unfortunately, your air duct contains a lot of dirt, dust, and allergens as they work frequently to provide cooled or heated air around your home. As air conditioning systems draw in air from the outside world to cool the house, it is easy for contaminants to enter your home.

Cleaning air ducts is a complicated process that requires specific knowledge. As such, you should always engage professionals for cleaning services to help you do a thorough job. If you are unsure of whether your air duct requires cleaning, read on to find out some signs of a dirty air duct.

Presence of Mold in Your Air Conditioning System

Your air conditioning system should undergo maintenance and clean periodically. Professionals recommend your system to be serviced at least twice a year. Due to the condensation that results from cooling air, mold growth is a possibility, especially if the climate you live in is a humid one. If your technician informs you that your air conditioning system has mold, you should ask to see the evidence. Once confirmed, you can contact a mold expert. Air conditioning technicians may not have the credentials to get rid of mold, so you should ensure you get a certified professional to do so.

Even if mold is found, it does not necessarily mean your air ducts are affected. However, it makes it highly possible. It is important to engage professionals to check to make sure.

Your Home is Newly Renovated

Construction sites are very messy. Even if contractors clean up and barricade off areas to keep the rest of the house not undergoing construction tidy, little pieces of debris and dust will find their way in. Unless your air conditioning system is not turned on and kept completely covered up throughout the construction work, it is possible for the dust and dirt to find their way to your air ducts. Furthermore, construction dust contains matter that can be harmful when you breathe it in. You should call professionals to clean your air ducts before any other major problems arise.

Your Home is Dusty Despite Cleaning

Cleaning up dust is not the most exciting activity but is something we have to do often. However, if you notice that surfaces and areas of your house seem to always have a layer of dust even if you just cleaned the area, you probably need to clean your air ducts. You can look at the supply and return vents in your home. Do they look dirty? Go one step further to check by removing the vent cover and looking into the ductwork. If they are covered in dust, it is time to schedule a professional air duct cleaning service.

Increasing Cost for Heating or Cooling Air

Every year, the costs incurred from switching on the air conditioning and heater should be relatively similar and predictable. However, if you notice your bill increasing even though you find your usage to be about the same, you may have a problem. In some cases, the air duct is so dirty that air cannot flow through the system efficiently and freely. As such, the air conditioner needs to work harder to maintain the temperature of the room, thus consuming more electricity and resulting in higher utility bills.

If you are looking for professionals to help clean your air ducts, look no further than SERVPRO of Southern and Central Jefferson County. Our team of professionals will be able to help you with keeping your air ducts clean. Feel free to contact us for more information about our services today!

Benefits of Air Duct Cleaning

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

Dirty ducts? Call us.

Is it worth having your air ducts clean?  Getting the ventilation systems inspected should be a high priority on your to-do list. In most cases, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system has been operating for some time without attention.  Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your business or home.

   Clean air ducts benefits:

  • Eliminates offensive odors
  • Reduces potential mold growth
  • Remediates bacteria, fungi and mold
  • Restore peak energy efficiency
  • Lowers indoor air pollution

A routine part of the SERVPRO of Southern and Central Jefferson County service is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save you money.

Once a year:

  • Enlist the help of a plumber or handyman to drain and check your water heater.  This can help diagnose problems.
  • Replace your RO (Reverse Osmosis) filter.  It is best to have a plumber or RO technician to help you with this process.

  • Clean your faucet aerator/screens.  A handyman can do this, or you can do it yourself.
  • Service HVAC system.  An HVAC company is the best choice for this service.

Four times a year:

  • Replace filters.  A handyman or yourself can do this.  A pro-tip will be to put the size of your filters in the notes section of your cell phone if you have one.  Then, set calendar alerts.

Every two years:

  • Service your water softener.  A water softener technician or plumber can help.

Every five years:

  • Replace water supply lines with the help of a plumber
  • Replace the RO (Reverse Osmosis) flex tubes

  • Replace your water heater.
Replace p-traps which are located under sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms.  This can help prevent water leaks or significant floods.

3 Ways to Keep Your Washing Machine Mold Free

4/22/2021 (Permalink)

You rely on the washing machine in your home to turn your dirty laundry into fresh and clean clothes. However, like all household appliances, your machine needs to be well maintained to prevent problems from occurring. While it may seem unnecessary to clean an appliance that already does the cleaning for you, failing to do so can cause mold to crop up in your unit. Here are some helpful guidelines for taking proper care of your appliance and keeping mold damage at bay.

Leave the Door Open

During a typical wash cycle, your appliance uses multiple gallons of water to thoroughly clean your clothing. This means that there are still traces of moisture left in the machine even after the cycle is over. To prevent this moisture from building up and leading to mold growth, always leave the washing machine door open after you’re done with a full load. This can help the unit dry out faster and more effectively.

Clean the Gasket

The machine’s gasket, which is the circular rubber flap that wraps around the inside of the door, is a major breeding ground for mold. If you ever notice a mold smell coming from your unit, there’s a good chance that it originated from under the gasket. Be sure to clean this part of your machine at least once a month to prevent water buildup that can create mold.

Clean the Detergent Drawer

To keep your detergent drawer free of mold, make sure to do the following:

  • Remove it from the machine
  • Soak it in hot water
  • Thoroughly remove any traces of mold
  • Rinse and let it dry completely

You can use a toothbrush to pry mold out of all the nooks and crannies in the detergent drawer. Make sure the drawer is completely dry and clean before putting it back in place.
If you notice a mold smell coming from your washing machine, don’t wait!

Because we care!

10/15/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that there are multiple types of hundreds of thousands of mold spores floating around outdoors? Knowing the dangers of mold, it is quite frightening thinking about it, but what is more of a concern would be finding mold inside your own home. Mold is known to belong to the kingdom of fungi. It can appear to be plant-like, but cannot create its own food. It absorbs its nutrients from other organic substances. Mold can simply generate with water and something living – or even once living, like wood. Invitations of mold to your own home would consist of poor ventilation, moisture and water damages which were not addressed immediately. In any areas of your home that moisture issues happen to occur, you want to be sure that you have a source of ventilation within that area. The consistent moisture and humidity will eventually cause mold. This is another reason to report any serious water damages right away. You may be able to clean the visible mess but sometimes the affected areas cannot be seen. SERVPRO of Southern and Central Jefferson County is here for you, anytime. If you have any questions or concerns due to recent water loss or any visible mold, do not hesitate to call us 636-467-5444. Our team will always be there, ready to help.

There is not a typical timeline in which your system should be regularly cleaned, but there are a few signs to look for:

Visible mold growth

Is your Southern & Central Jefferson County Home Storm Ready?

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

As anyone who lives here knows, springtime in Southern & Central Jefferson County brings beautiful sunshine as well as strong rain and wind storms. With weather that can switch so quickly between the two, it’s important to make sure your home is storm-ready, prepared to handle and withstand unpredictable conditions.

It’s always a good idea to conduct a home and ground inspection before weather conditions take a turn for the worst. Things like leaky roofs or windows can be very problematic in the midst of heavy rainfall and strong winds, so checking them and making sure they are all fitted correctly is a critical step to take.

Checking for loose shutters and trimming back any trees or shrubbery that may be surrounding your home is another good way to get it storm-ready. Shutters, tree limbs, and other loose debris can get picked up by wind and thrown in any direction, including towards your house. Also inspect any drainage areas near or around your home, clearing them of any debris that may be creating blockage. This will help reduce chances of flooding your property during a storm.

Another thing to consider when preparing your home for a storm is what kind of system to have in place that will allow you to communicate with your loved ones and receive weather updates. In some cases, storms can become strong enough to put your cell phone’s service signal at risk, so it’s good to be prepared and have an alternative form of communication in place.

And as always, in the event of storm damage SERVPRO of Southern and Central Jefferson County is here to help. We’re available 24/7 and ready when you need us. Give us a call at (636) 467-5444.

Every fire damage situation is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. When various materials burn, the soot they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The 7 steps listed below illustrate the SERVPRO of Southern and Central Jefferson County's’ process for the “typical” fire damage restoration.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
